Bottles and Cans

Ten states require deposits-Ten US states have “bottle bill” legislation requiring a refundable deposit (usually 5¢ or 10¢) on beverage containers to encourage recycling: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oregon, and Vermont. Deposits typically cover beer, soft drinks, and water, with some states including wine/liquor. In these states stores and recycling centers will pay you for your cans and bottles. In the other 40 states please put your plastic bottles and aluminum cans in the recycling bin.

Tennis Balls

To recycle golf balls, consider these option:
  1. Local golf courses often collect used golf balls.
  2. Sporting goods stores often collect golf balls for recycling.
  3. Online stores: Google to find an online store that will recycle your old balls.
  4. Charities: Some charities will collect old golf balls.

Furniture

Furniture—Donate to Amvets (small furniture)

You can donate a couch to several charities and organizations, many of which offer free pickup, including Habitat for Humanity ReStore, The Salvation Army, Furniture Banks, Goodwill, Pickup Please (Vietnam Veterans of America), and GreenDrop. Ensure the couch is in good, clean condition (no rips, stains, or pet hair) as these organizations generally do not accept heavily damaged furniture.

Cars and Trucks

Junkyards recycle old cars and trucks and sell the steel and other components to steel companies.

Boats-Surrendered Vessel Program (SAVE)

California offers a free, legal way for recreational boat owners to dispose of unwanted vessels through the Surrendered and Abandoned Vessel Exchange (SAVE) program.
